Quick Toothache Relief: 4 Home Remedies That Can Work

Man with a severe toothache

If you are dealing with some dental discomfort, your first search online might be “what to do if I have a toothache?” After taking a quick glance at what the necessary steps are, you’ve called and made an appointment with your emergency dentist. You’ll see them soon to get rid of the problem, but what can you do about the pain now? Here are four home remedies that you can try.

1.)  Swish Warm Salt Water

You may use salt to give your dishes an extra punch, but you can also use it to lessen your toothache. All you have to do is mix half a teaspoon of it into a warm glass of water. Rinse your mouth with it, and it can help clear out any debris and bacteria. It’ll also help reduce inflammation while promoting healing.

2.)  Apply a Cold Pack

An effective way to soothe the area is by pressing a cold pack against your cheek. The cold temperature can reduce blood flow to the area, slightly numbing it. If you don’t have one handy, you can make your own by putting ice in a plastic baggie and wrapping it in a cloth. Put it against your mouth for 15 minutes at a time.

3.)  Munch Some Garlic

Garlic may give your meals a great aroma while tasting just as good, but it can also help with your toothache. For centuries, it’s been used for its medicinal properties, particularly killing harmful bacteria. To use it for your dental discomfort, you simply have to slowly chew on a fresh clove or grind it into a paste and apply it to the tooth causing trouble.

4.)  Dab On Vanilla Extract

You can also use vanilla extract for more than making your favorite baked treats. It has alcohol while also being an antioxidant, so it can numb the pain you feel while being beneficial for healing. Apply a small amount of it on a cotton swab or your finger and gently put it on the tooth. It’s important you make sure you use real vanilla, as the imitation may not be effective.

Hopefully, one of these home remedies works for your toothache! Remember that they only offer a temporary solution. You may find relief, but your dentist can give you a permanent fix to the underlying problem. You’ll be able to have a confident smile that’s pain-free in no time with their help.
