Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation is administered in the form of a single pill that our team will prescribe before your appointment. The medication is typically one in the diazepam family, like Halcion or Valium, and you’ll take it about an hour before your visit. By the time you arrive at our office, you will feel at ease and much more relaxed. Because the effects can linger for up to 8 hours, you will need to have someone take you to and pick you up from the office.
IV Sedation
IV sedation is typically only recommended in situations where patients have severe dental fear, or more complex or longer procedures are needed, like dental implant placement or oral surgery. We will administer the medication directly into the bloodstream, so you will feel the effects virtually immediately. You will need to take the remainder of the day off from work, as the medication’s effects can last for up to 24 hours.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous oxide is ideal for patients who have mild to moderate dental phobia or anxiety, or for those with a sensitive gag reflex. All that’s required is for you to breathe in a colorless, odorless gas through a small nose mask. Within a minute or so, you’ll feel a euphoric wave come over you that will help you settle into the treatment chair and feel comfortable.
