What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are titanium posts that are typically between 4 and 16 millimeters long. They’re threaded and look similar to a screw, but they’re surgically placed below the gumline and within the jawbone to mimic the natural roots of your teeth. Due to their biocompatible nature, they can then fuse with the jawbone, offering a dental crown, bridge, or denture a secure base to be attached to.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

If you want to learn how dental implants work in Grand Prairie, you must first understand the basic treatment process. There are four steps every patient must complete: the initial consultation, dental implant surgery, osseointegration and abutment placement, and the delivery of the final restoration. Although the journey will look different for each person, these steps are the necessary path to a beautiful, long-lasting, fully restored smile.

Initial Dental Implant Consultation

Our team will begin your dental implant journey with an in-depth consultation with one of our dentists in Grand Prairie. We’ll take a cone beam CT scan of your facial structure, which will produce a 3D model for our review. This will allow us to analyze your oral anatomy and determine the proper placement of dental implants. We’ll also ask you about your oral and medical health histories. Based on our evaluation, we will determine whether you’re a good candidate for dental implants and develop a treatment plan for your review.

If we find any oral health issues, such as gum disease, dental decay, or jawbone resorption, we will need to treat these before proceeding with dental implant surgery.

Dental Implant Surgery

The next step of your process is the surgical placement of the dental implants. Our qualified dentists can complete this step in-house, ensuring you’ll continue to be seen by the same team you know and trust, rather than being referred to another office.

On the day of your procedure, we will make sure you are comfortable before administering local anesthesia to numb your mouth. You will feel no pain throughout the procedure. If needed, we can also provide dental sedation to calm your nerves. Once you are numb, we will place each titanium implant into the designated area of your jawbone, ensuring it remains properly seated and stable. After closing your gum tissues, our team will place protective healing caps over each one to aid in your recovery.

Dental Implant Osseointegration/Abutment

For the next three to six months, your dental implants will fuse with your jawbone through a process called osseointegration. During this time, you can expect to experience some soreness, swelling, and minor bleeding. You will need to follow the aftercare instructions provided by our dentists to avoid complications during your recovery.

Your gums will also heal around your posts, and typically, our patients feel well enough to return to work within a day or two following their surgery.

Once you are fully healed and our team is confident that your implants and bone are properly fused, we will attach metal abutments to each implant post. This small connector appliance will help hold your restoration in place.

Delivery of Dental Implant Restorations

Before you receive your final restoration, our team will capture impressions of your mouth, which we’ll send to our dental laboratory to create your permanent prosthetic. As soon as we receive it, which is typically within about two weeks, we’ll call you back in to secure it to your dental implants and complete your smile!
